Presbyopia is the gradual inability of the eye to accommodate or focus on near objects because of the normal aging process that takes place at the crystalline lens inside our eyes. It is most commonly noticed by patients or detected at a routine eye exam after age 40. Although presbyopia is something we all will eventually experience, nearsighted and farsighted patients may notice the start of presbyopia at different times in their lives. Some nearsighted patients are able to delay the need for a reading prescription because the shape of their eye is such that even with the loss of accommodation, it is able to focus the light rays directly to the back of the retina for clear vision. With the use of glasses or contacts most patients are able to achieve clear vision.
